Traveling DNC Gnome, Joe Andrew, speaking
to a member of the Press Corp.; at, of all places,
the 2000 Republican National Convention
Yesterday, Joe Andrew, who was Democratic National Committee Chairman from 1999-2001 rallied hometown Indianapolis voters in support of Senator Barack Obama.
Andrew's cry, to unify the Democratic party and stop the bleeding and possible irreparable damage that the current rift between the two Democratic candidates may be causing, is noble. However it wasn't very long ago that he was in support of his former employer, Bill Clinton's wife.
Last year when Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton Jr. announced her candidacy for President of the United States, Andrew endorsed her immediately. Now he, in true Democratic fashion, flip-flopped his support. He cites two important factors that lead him to reverse course.
Barack Obama opposes the proposed 'Summer Gas Tax Holiday', even though it would be the politically correct or easy path to follow during an election year. Senator Clinton is in favor of it.
Andrew also likes the way Obama has handled himself during the Rev. Jeremiah Wright controversy. Obama initially refused to denounce his former pastor, when Wright openly criticized the United States. He did so after Wright suggested, among other ludicrous suggestions and accusations, that Obama really agrees with him.
“He has shown such mettle under fire,” Andrew said. “The Jeremiah Wright controversy just reconfirmed for me, just as the gas tax controversy confirmed for me, that he is the right candidate for our party.”
Andrew has valid points and he's correct about the damage this race is causing the Democratic party. After all, Republican candidate Senator John McCain has had a pretty easy time lately, as the Democrats do all of his work for him and he is able to run neck and neck with them as a result.
Note: McCain supports the Summer Gas Tax Holiday but denounces Rev. Jeremiah Wright, if you're keeping score.
